Who is Minianka...

Minianka is a community of artists immersed in traditional West African music, song, dance and folklore. Rooted deep in the cultural essence of the old Malian Empire, Minianka also focuses on the expression of our heritage in African American culture.

Our Mission...

Under the direction of its founders, Meshach (who is now among our ancestors) and Nahgeree Silas, Minianka strives to preserve the rich cultures of West Afrika and abroad while presenting a feast for your eyes. Since 1994 Minianka has embodied many different elements, from the masquerades, to the hottest and most cohesive djembe and Serouba orchestra in Chicago. Minianka has also been known for its phenomenal dancers, spectacular choreography and folkloric repertoire.

"Minianka is truly a diamond in the rough that is coming into the light!"

Minianka "Those who refused the master"
The Minianka, an ethnic group from Mali, believe that the musicians are on the same level as mental or physical healers. They promote harmony in all things. (- Ref: "The Healing Drum” Written by: Mitchell Hall & Yaya Diallo)
